Huay Tung Tao Lake was part of our Day 1 itinerary on a 7 day Chiang Mai round-trip.
The lake is located about 17 km from Chiang Mai International Airport, which is approximately 40 minutes drive. It is a large reservoir located at the foot of Doi Suthep mountain and therefore, you get a beautiful mountain backdrop. This is to be our first stop upon arrival in Chiang Mai and a half-way point to our target destination, Mon Cham.
What To Do
1. Walk around the lake
Huay Tung Tao Lake is a fantastic place to relax and unwind while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. If you have the time, do a circular walk of 5 km around the lake to enjoy the views at different parts of the lake. You will be able to see shelters made of wood and hay on land at one side while on the opposite side, the shelters are almost floating on waters. Since we have only allocated 30 minutes for this stop, our private driver offered to drive us around the lake to save time.
2. Eat at the restaurant
There are restaurants located around the lake where you can order food and then eat at the shelters. Since this place is mostly patronized by the locals, you can be sure that the food here is cheap and reasonable. We have done this on a previous trip to Bangkok and it is definitely one way to experience the local Thai culture.
3. Take a swan ride
You can also do the swan ride around the lake if you are travelling with kids. Do take note that swimming is not allowed here as the waters in the lake is deep.
4. Visit the Golden Buddha statues
On the opposite side of the lake from where the swan ride is located, you will be able to find a couple of Golden Buddha statues.
